Frequently asked questions
On this page you can find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the SilentSend service

  • Can SilentSend protect my email from viruses and malware?
    SilentSend scans attachments for viruses and uses standard anti-spam methods. However, we do not guarantee protection of files stored locally on your device. You are responsible for the security of your devices (protection from viruses, malware and hacker attacks).

    For increased security, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the SilentSend threat model, which describes in detail what exactly our service protects and what risks require your attention.

    Important: SilentSend does not replace antivirus software and measures to protect local systems.
  • What are the technical requirements for using SilentSend?
    To use SilentSend, you only need a device with a modern web browser and internet access. Our service is accessible from anywhere in the world - no additional software needs to be installed.
  • How can I reset my password?
    Click "Reset Password" in the SilentSend interface. A recovery link will be sent to your alternate email - that's why we recommend you specify it when registering.
  • Can I send encrypted messages to people who are not SilentSend users?
    Yes. Recipients do not have to use SilentSend to read or reply to your encrypted messages. They can decrypt them using their OpenPGP private key.

    How it works:
    • Send encrypted messages to any recipient (even non-SilentSend ones) as long as they have OpenPGP support.
    • Add a digital signature to any message to verify its authenticity.

    Important:
    Recipients will need to have OpenPGP-compatible software (such as GnuPG or PGP clients) configured to reply to encrypted messages.
  • Does SilentSend allow key management?
    SilentSend gives you full control over your OpenPGP keys via built-in storage. You can perform a full range of encryption operations without restrictions.

    How it works:
    • Import existing private and public keys;
    • Update and add public keys of your contacts;
    • Generate revocation certificates for keys;
    • Export data and key pairs for migration to other systems.

    Important:
    Your keys and data remain under your control. SilentSend does not limit the storage period or use of keys, providing flexibility and platform independence.
  • I use Gmail/Hotmail/Ymail to communicate with SilentSend users. What data is available to the email provider and SilentSend about this message?
    When exchanging end-to-end encrypted emails via third-party plugins (e.g. Mailvelope), your email provider (Gmail/Hotmail/Ymail) and SilentSend have access to the following metadata:

    • Sender and recipient addresses;
    • Email subject;
    • Message size;
    • IP addresses;
    • Sent/received time.

    Important:
    The email content is encrypted, but the metadata remains visible to providers. For complete privacy, use SilentSend with tools that hide metadata (e.g. Tor or VPN).
  • Can I access my encrypted messages without using SilentSend?
    Yes. For example:
    • You can connect to your account via IMAP/POP in a local client (e.g. Thunderbird) and access your messages.
    • Export encrypted keys and messages from SilentSend to open them in any third-party PGP-compatible software.

    Important:
    Your data is not tied to SilentSend. You can always move keys and messages to other applications, while maintaining full control over encryption.
